Located in Poughkeepsie, NY–just an hour’s drive outside of Manhattan–Vassar combines the education of a small liberal arts college with an accessibility to one of the nation’s largest cultural centers. Although Vassar was founded in 1861 with the aim of providing a first-rate education for young women, the College eventually went coed in 1969. Vassar is known for its demanding curriculum, small classes, and close interaction between students and faculty. It is consistently named as one of the best colleges in the United States, and ranks among the top ten American colleges producing Fulbright scholars. Notable Vassar alumni and one-time students include Meryl Streep, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Anthony Bourdain, and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Distinguishing Vassar from many other schools is the fact that 98% of all undergrads choose to live on campus; this fosters a tight-knit feel among students. The school offers more than 100 clubs and organizations, including athletics on the Division III level. While not technically recognized by the NCAA, the Vassar Butterbeer Brewers compete fiercely in Quidditch against other collegiate teams.
