Set in the center of the Michigan “hand,” Michigan State University is a hub of academic activity and diversity. Though it is a large university with nearly 37,000 undergraduates and more than 10,000 graduate students, Michigan State is divided into 15 colleges according to major field, such as Business or Agriculture and Natural Resources. Featuring a wide variety of clubs and organizations, Michigan State encourages students to experience new and different opportunities. The extracurricular range of possibilities includes recreational and varsity sports, Greek communities, academic associations, religious organizations and much more.
With the largest single-campus residence hall system in the nation, Michigan State has many options available to freshmen, who are required to live on campus for the first year. Many students choose to live in academic living-learning communities according to their area of academic interest; examples of such program housing includes the James Madison College for students studying politics and law, and the Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience (MRULE) for further immersion among students of all backgrounds. Such opportunities–and many others–help establish Michigan State as a school truly focused on personalizing students’ educational experiences and broadening their horizons.
