Founded in 1856, St. Lawrence University stakes its place in history as New York’s oldest coed university. Today, the school’s reputation has shifted from that of pioneer in equality, to one of academic achievement. With a low student acceptance rate and a campus geared toward studies, St. Lewis encourages a pursuit of knowledge on students’ behalf. In fact, the university’s Canton, NY campus is considered a “walking zone,” as no vehicles are permitted on campus; in addition, those walking the campus will notice a zen, Japanese-like environment. In fact, these areas were designed by students who were simultaneously inspired by the reflective nature of Japan and the quiet beauty of upstate New York. This combination makes for a tranquil and welcoming environment for students, even at otherwise stressful exam times.

Despite the school’s name, SLU is completely secular and not affiliated with any church. Following suit, the school’s student body is comprised of many different ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. Extracurricular offerings are similarly diverse. From the Islamic Culture Club to the Sexuality and Gender Activists (with many in between), SLU earns high marks for its range of student organizations.
